Joshua's Journey with Asthma
At first, Joshua thought skipping his medication wasn't a big deal. But it quickly turned into a problem that sent him to the emergency room multiple times. “I stopped taking my medicine for a year, and it was one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made,” Joshua shared. Without his daily medications, his asthma spiraled out of control. Simple activities like walking or a light jog turned into impossible tasks. He was constantly short of breath, coughing up mucus, and struggling just to stay conscious. “Literally, a light jog would kill me. I would have to go straight in the house to a nebulizer.”
Joshua’s condition worsened until he could barely breathe. “There was a week where I couldn’t breathe at all,” he recalls. Desperate, he went to the ER, but doctors struggled to identify what was happening. “It was scary. They were giving me EpiPens, needles, trying to keep me conscious.” He found himself in and out of the hospital two or three times during that period, a terrifying experience that left him exhausted and fearful.
It took a major wake-up call for Joshua to understand the severity of his situation. “One day, I just really couldn’t breathe. I remember thinking, ‘What am I doing to myself?’ I didn’t want to end up in the hospital again.” That’s when he decided to get back on track and start taking his medications regularly. “Ever since I started taking my meds again, everything changed. I’m able to run, work out, and do sports—things I couldn’t do as a kid. I can’t believe I put myself through that.”
Joshua hopes his story can serve as a reminder to others about the importance of managing asthma and staying consistent with medication. “No one believed me except my mom when I said how bad it was. But now, I’m proof that taking your meds can turn your life around.”
