Michael's Journey with Diabetes
Diabetes was a part of Michael's life from a young age. He was a third-generation diabetic, watching his family struggle with the disease. Some family members faced painful problems, like losing their vision or even having amputations. But Michael proved that change is possible. By choosing a healthier lifestyle, he became the first in his family to break free from diabetes.
Finding His "Why"
When Michael learned his own health was in trouble, with a high A1C level of 11.5, he had a powerful thought: "That wasn't going to be my journey," he said. Remembering his family's struggles, he knew he needed to make a change—not just for himself but to show others that it was possible too.
Creating His Own Path
Michael didn’t start by going to the gym. Instead, he took small steps that felt natural. He began by walking his dogs every day. As he kept this routine, his weight started to drop. Encouraged by the results, he even got another dog to keep things fun. This simple habit helped him lose 85 pounds in just a year, and he lowered his A1C from 11.5 to 5.4.
Building a Support Network
Michael didn't face this journey alone. Through a program with CareFirst and Scene Health, he had daily check-ins with a team, including nurses, a pharmacist, and a life coach. Each day, he sent videos of himself taking his medication, sharing his progress, and celebrating small victories. His team gave him more than support—they cheered him on every step of the way. "The support was amazing," he said. "It was more than just a program—it felt like a family."
Beyond Medications
Breaking free from diabetes meant focusing on his whole body. Michael changed his diet, kept up regular exercise, and focused on staying positive. "This is something you don’t have to accept," he said about diabetes. By choosing a healthy lifestyle, he showed his family and others that managing, and even reversing, diabetes is possible.
Inspiring Others
Now, Michael is part of a support group, encouraging others to make healthier choices. He openly shares his story, hoping it will inspire others. "If I can do this, anyone can," he said. His message is simple but powerful: diabetes doesn’t have to be forever. With the right support and a commitment to change, breaking the cycle is possible.
Michael’s story shows that taking control of one’s health goes beyond just taking medicine—it’s about living freely and healthily and inspiring future generations to do the same.
