Can Asthma Come Back Later in Life? Hear Angel’s Story

Angel has had asthma since she was a toddler. Growing up, she spent a lot of time in the hospital because of it. "They couldn't get it under control," she said. As she got older, she thought she had outgrown it. "I was like, oh, I'm good. And then one day, it just all of a sudden came back." After having a severe asthma attack, Angel knew she had to start managing her health more seriously.

Learning to Manage Asthma the Right Way

With the help of nurses and a coach, Angel learned how to use her inhaler correctly and stick to a routine. "I also learned how to stay on schedule with doing my preventive twice a day." Now, she pays more attention to how she sleeps, what triggers her asthma, and how she feels throughout the day. "I'm definitely a better person than when I started."

A Supportive Team

One of the best parts of the program for Angel was the support she received. "It was all up to the work I put into it. If I didn't put any work into it, then I wouldn't get any results. But the nurses made that very easy." She especially appreciated Nurse Ashley and Coach Eli. "Nurse Ashley always has a smile. Every time I see her video or face, I'm like, okay. And Coach Eli gave me great pointers throughout the whole time in the program."

Angel was amazed at how much support she got. "I was shocked by how much encouragement I had on a daily basis. It was amazing because I did not expect that." She thought managing asthma was just about taking an inhaler and moving on. "But they have been very involved in my health, not only with my asthma but overall everything."

A New Beginning

For 33 years, Angel struggled with addiction. "Basically, I ignored my asthma and other health issues because I was in an addiction." But now, she is almost 20 months clean. "I have had to start taking medicines to help build my body back up, but also to be mindful of my asthma and things I ignored for years."

With the help of the program, she is learning to take better care of herself. "The nurses and Coach Eli helped me to align with my medicine, pay attention to my asthma and my triggers, so I can better manage my overall health now that I have been clean for all these months."

Looking Ahead

Angel is focused on getting healthier. "When I was in addiction, I weighed 135 pounds, and since I've been clean, I've gained 222 pounds because my body lacked all the nutrients." Now, she is working on finding balance. "I'm trying to get my body back healthy, lose a couple of pounds, and do things the right way. Coach Eli sent me some pointers on that, so that was pretty cool."

She credits her success to the support she received. "The nurses and Coach Eli are very supportive, and that helped me out a lot. Had I not had that support, I probably wouldn't have done it at all. So it was a great team of people, and y'all couldn't pick no one more perfect than those you have. I appreciate that."

Angel’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to take charge of your health. With the right support, commitment, and a little bit of patience, big changes are possible.
